Why Is Reinforcement Necessary?

When a welded tee connection or a branch is added to an existing run pipe, the strength of that segment can be compromised due to the cut or hole. Without proper reinforcement, this area becomes vulnerable to structural failure.

To compensate, one of two methods is typically applied:

• Use of pipe with increased wall thickness from the outset, or

• Adding structural reinforcement after connection this is where reinforcing saddles come in.

What Are Reinforcing Saddles?

A reinforcing saddle is a non-pressure-retaining structural element designed to reinforce a pipe connection, typically over a welded tee. It does not hold pressure but supports structural integrity by restoring or enhancing the strength lost during modifications.

To ensure no pressure is trapped between the saddle and the pipe wall, saddles include a weep hole for safe venting.

Reinforcing saddles are available in two types:

 Full Encirclement Saddles

• Wrap entirely around the pipe circumference

• Ideal for larger branch outlets or critical stress areas

• Designed according to ASME B31.3, B31.4, and B31.8

• Available in a range of sizes and outlet configurations

• Can be fabricated or extruded for enhanced strength and radiographic inspection capability

• Vented options available to safely release trapped gases during installation or welding

 Partial Reinforcement Saddles

• Installed over specific segments of the pipe

• Provide targeted support where stress concentrations are highest

• Ideal for less critical connections or compact installations

• Offer flexible reinforcement without encircling the entire pipe
